About IESL JIY

The ‘Junior Inventor of the Year’ (JIY) competition is a monumental effort brought to life by the Institution of Engineering Sri Lanka (IESL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Sri Lanka. The competition intends to inspire the innovative young generation of Sri Lanka by pioneering the platform to bring out their creativity, inventiveness, and ingenuity. Intending to empower young minds, the competition allows students to present innovations of their own and offers recognition they truly deserve. Being a locally and globally recognized platform the Junior Inventor of the Year competition is the best way to pave the path for the creative young community in Sri Lanka. The youth between the age of 12-19 years are invited to unleash their inner potential through the JIY competition organized for the 42nd consecutive year in 2024.

Mission

The mission of the Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) Competition is to cultivate the spirit of innovation and ingenuity among young minds aged 12 to 19. Through a platform that encourages hands-on exploration and problem-solving, we aim to provide students with the tools, mentorship, and recognition needed to transform their imaginative ideas into tangible inventions. By promoting STEM education and nurturing a passion for innovation, JIY is committed to unlocking the boundless potential within each participant and contributing to a world enriched by their groundbreaking contributions.

The Competition

Pioneered by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) in 1980, the Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) Competition stands as a beacon, illuminating the path of innovation and creativity for school children across Sri Lanka. Aimed at nurturing the inventive spirit of individuals aged 12 to 19, this competition has become a cornerstone in fostering a culture of ingenuity within the younger generation.

Competitors who are selected through preliminary competitions move forward to the final competition held in August, where their inventions undergo further evaluation. The JIY finalists, carrying the torch of innovation, are then facilitated to display their inventions at the JIY Stall during the annual flagship event of the IESL—the Techno Exhibition in October 2024.

Beyond the competition, JIY leaves an indelible mark on the participants, fostering a spirit of curiosity, problem-solving, and inventive thinking. By providing a platform for young inventors to shine, JIY contributes to the development of a new generation of thinkers and problem solvers who will shape the future.
